BLEG: FEMA + DNR = Trouble
Because people in New Orleans insist on living below sea level, floodplain maps throughout the U.S. are being redrawn. I learned of this completely by accident when attending a public hearing on a different matter.
I found nothing about this project when Googling JSOnline and haven't found anything elsewhere for that matter. Having looked at the DNR's Floodplain Mapping website I still have no clue as to what is happening.
Waukesha County was also no help and my call to the DNR has not been returned. Before I decide to become a Doyle campaign contributor in order to get an answer, can someone educate me on this project and what I need to do to protect my property?

If you're freshly-minted into a floodplain, it's simple; the feds want you to subsidize New Orleans through flood insurance. If it's the other way, dunno.
Steve - I think you nailed it. I verified with Waukesha County that my land was outside the flood plain before buying & building. I've heard that things may have changed since 1993.
It appears to me that DNR is trying to limit public involvement in this process by failing to announce public meetings and making their website vague about property owners rights.

D29 - Maps can be found by chosing a "Public Flood Map" using the "Product Search by Address" link in the upper right of this website.

Choose the VIEW option in the new window. After zooming to the region of interest, choose the "Make a FIRMette" option. You can get the map as a PDF or image file.
