Bonus baby!

I got my bonus today. Unbelievable!

Thanks go out to Dr. Phil Jones and the East Anglia U. Hockey Team for making my carbon-phobic billing rate possible. Despite my vested interest in continuing global warming hysteria, I remain a skeptic and a denier.

Everything you need to know about global warming

The properties of mercury in a glass tube are subject to periodic change and adjustment by Michael Mann and Phil Jones.
The blue line is the actual temperature measurement recorded for Darwin, Australia. The black line is adjustments made to the blue line to create the red line. The red line is the official "homogenized and adjusted" temperature record used by the IGCC to "demonstrate" that the earth is warming.

Don't believe your lying eyes, trust the CRU at East Anglia U.

Asking these "experts" for the temperature is like asking an ACLU attorney what the plain English of the Constitution means. They each create their own alternative reality.

UCS deniers picked a good day for this

The Union of Concerned Scientists released this "Factcheck" on the same day that Phil Jones decided to step down.

Contrarians Using Hacked E-mails To Try to Fool Public on Climate Science

In their ongoing campaign to distort the facts and deceive the public, climate policy opponents are misrepresenting illegally obtained e-mails from the Climate Research Unit at the University of East Anglia in Great Britain. Opposition groups are taking passages out of context to try to undermine public confidence in climate science.

The e-mails provide no information that would affect the scientific understanding of climate change, as many contrarians are falsely claiming. For years, thousands of scientists working at climate research centers around the world have carefully and rigorously reached a consensus on the extent of climate change, the urgency of the problem, and the role human activity plays in causing it.

They start with an ad hominem and their arguments deteriorate from there by just making shit up.

UCS should try looking at the computer code that was also released by this courageous whistleblower. If it is beyond the abilities of these Concerned Scientists, Lord Monckton has conveniently issued a report that addresses the manipulation of data in the CRU codes.

Who are the deniers, now?

The Other McCain said it. Believe it.
All along, the strongest evidence that anthropogenic global warming (AGW) was a hoax was a simple fact: Liberals believed in it.

They found the hockey stick!

I made a comment at Dad's blog on Saturday that although the leaked Climate Research Unit emails were pretty damning, the good stuff would come out when the climate experts started going through the computer files. Well, I was both right and wrong on that one.

Although some nuggets have been mined from the computer code, it wasn't the climatologists that found them. It is the computer programmers that hit the jackpot. Buried in over 350 comments at Watts Up With That? is this comment on some specific lines of code.

This may be the real smoking gun. It appears that Briffa just made up numbers to add to the dendro measurements to give the result he wanted. These were not weights, but temperature values added to the raw measurements, see the ‘yyy+yearlyadj’ in the code. Not only did he add temperature to eliminate the post-1960 decline (the ‘trick’), but subtracted it from measurements around the 1930s to eliminate the warm period there.

In words that even old biddies and young girls just going through first menses can understand, this computer program adds up to 2.6 degrees Celsius to temperatures starting in the 1970's and continuing until 2000 to give the appearance of GLOBAL WARMING! That's over 4 degrees Fahrenheit, and is a huge "fudge factor" (their word, not mine) made to show a false correlation of rising global temperature to rising carbon dioxide levels.

No wonder the Warmists would never share their data or computer correlations with the skeptics. They were made up. And it only took four days for some custodians, WalMart employees and laborers to prove it.

Flashing Siren Alert: Conspiracy to fake global warming exposed

Someone has hacked into the data files from the UK's Hadley Climate Research Unit and posted some damning files on a Russian FTP site. Emails included in the files demonstrate a conspiracy to doctor data to show evidence of global warming where it doesn't exist.

Good comments threads are here and here.

By special request

I had a request in this previous post to make "a chart of weekly rice prices, oil prices, corn prices, ethanol prices(or any internationally traded commodity)" because I would "find they all had a major peak in 2008 summer."

Shown above are ethanol, corn, pork bellies, and gold - all internationally traded commodities. I'm still looking for that common peak in the summer of 2008.

Gaia don't need no cap & trade

In honor of today's cap & trade vote, I direct you to this recent paper posted at Watts Up With That? presenting Willis Eschenbach's Thermostat Hypothesis for global temperature control. Eschenbach's hypothesis is that tropical clouds and thunderstorms actively regulate the temperature of the earth. This keeps the earth at a equilibrium temperature.

The paper is a long read, and the fascinating discussion in the comments is even longer. These are my thoughts on Eschenbach's hypothesis.
Thermodynamics on a global scale will prevent global warming from occurring. In additional to reflective cloud formation, the physical properties of water establish a setpoint temperature that when reached causes active heat engines to form. We call the active heat engines "thunderstorms," and they eject heat from the earth into space. The setpoint is approximately 305K (90 degrees Fahrenheit), and corresponds nicely with the maximum temperature found at sea level in our equatorial oceans.

Water's physical properties do not change, even with increasing atmospheric CO2, hence Gaia's setpoint cannot change with increasing human CO2 emissions.

The graphic below from Eschenbach's paper shows how equatorial clouds form through the day. More than half of the solar heating of the earth occurs in this equatorial zone. The warming sun causes cumulus clouds to form during the morning until sometime between 10:00 and 11:30 they reflect a large percent of the incoming solar energy. The clouds remain fairly constant and moderate temperature for most of the day until they reach a critical point where thunderstorms will form.

The cumulonimbus, or thunderstorm, clouds bypass any insulating greenhouse gases and pull heat directly from the earth's tropical surface into the troposphere. Here, the heat is ejected into space.

The heat reflected by the cumulus clouds and ejected by the cumulonimbus clouds is orders of magnitude greater than Al Gore's worst nightmare for greenhouse gas warming of the earth. Therefore, the earth will self regulate its temperature, and anthropogenic global warming is impossible.

A very intelligent design, indeed.

These are Eschenbach's Conclusions and Musings from his paper.
1. The sun puts out more than enough energy to totally roast the earth. It is kept from doing so by the clouds reflecting about a third of the sun’s energy back to space. As near as we can tell, this system of cloud formation to limit temperature rises has never failed.

2. This reflective shield of clouds forms in the tropics in response to increasing temperature.

3. As tropical temperatures continue to rise, the reflective shield is assisted by the formation of independent heat engines called thunderstorms. These cool the surface in a host of ways, move heat aloft, and convert heat to work.

4. Like cumulus clouds, thunderstorms also form in response to increasing temperature.

5. Because they are temperature driven, as tropical temperatures rise, tropical thunderstorms and cumulus production increase. These combine to regulate and limit the temperature rise. When tropical temperatures are cool, tropical skies clear and the earth rapidly warms. But when the tropics heat up, cumulus and cumulonimbus put a limit on the warming. This system keeps the earth within a fairly narrow band of temperatures.

6. The earth’s temperature regulation system is based on the unchanging physics of wind, water, and cloud.

7. This is a reasonable explanation for how the temperature of the earth has stayed so stable (or more recently, bi-stable as glacial and interglacial) for hundreds of millions of years.

What could go wrong?

As seen on Instapundit:
California's biggest energy utility announced a deal Monday to purchase 200 megawatts of electricity from a startup company that plans to beam the power down to Earth from outer space, beginning in 2016.

...

Solaren would generate the power using solar panels in Earth orbit and convert it to radio-frequency transmissions that would be beamed down to a receiving station in Fresno, PG&E said. From there, the energy would be converted into electricity and fed into PG&E's power grid.

...

Solaren's chief executive officer, Gary Spirnak, said the project would be the first real-world application of space solar power, a technology that has been talked about for decades but never turned into reality.

"While a system of this scale and exact configuration has not been built, the underlying technology is very mature and is based on communications satellite technology," he said in a Q&A posted by PG&E. A study drawn up for the Pentagon came to a similar conclusion in 2007. However, that study also said the cost of satellite-beamed power would likely be significantly higher than market rates, at least at first.

Talk about your unintended consequences. This technology is being developed to reduce the use of carbon based electricity, but it will directly cause global warming. How can concentrating and converting solar energy, then sending it to the planet not cause warming?

Granted, the warming will be on a very small scale, but it will be warming nonetheless. And probably warm the earth more than the CO2 from producing the same electricity using coal.

Statistical proof that I was correct.

Last month I made this post that declared that the cause of Global Warming was the manipulation of data by James Hansen and his colleagues. I really assumed that their mathematical "corrections" systematically revised the temperature data based on some logical assumptions.

Instead, we learn from Anthony Watts that statistical analysis provides evidence that Hansen and his crew are hand editing the data. You really can't make this stuff up.

David Stockwell has analyzed the frequency of the final digits in the temperature data by NASA’s GISS led by James Hansen, and he claims that the unequal distribution of the individual digits strongly suggests that the data have been modified by a human hand.

With Mathematica 7, such hypotheses take a few minutes to be tested. And remarkably enough, I must confirm Stockwell’s bold assertion.

But that’s not all, Lubos goes on to say:

Using the IPCC terminology for probabilities, it is virtually certain (more than 99.5%) that Hansen’s data have been tempered with.

I am personally aware from some work I've done in another scientific area that no matter how smart the scientists and engineers are, they are almost always lousy statisticians. When those pros get involved, they can cut through the crap and bullshit right away.

The cause of global warming - confirmed

Credit where credit is due. This graphic was developed by Warren Meyer using Anthony Watt's analysis (Watt's results shown below).

Everything you need to know about the cause of global warming is right here. The raw measured temperature data for the last 120 years show a cooling trend. Only after the global warming fraudsters adjust this data to match their theories and models does a "Global Warming Trend" emerge.

This brings me to that warning at the end of the late Michael Crichton's State of Fear:

WARNING: COMPUTER SIMULATION - MAY BE ERRONEOUS AND UNVERIFIABLE

There is no physical evidence of anthropogenic global warming. All the panic being generated by Al Gore, James Hansen, and Obama's Energy Secretary Steven Chu is based on computer simulations. Simulations using certain specific positive feedback assumptions with no factual physical basis.

Crichton wrote:
(I)t sounds like they went out and measured something. Actually, they just ran a simulation. They talk as if simulations were real-world data. They're not. That's a problem that has to be fixed.
Frankly, it is even worse than what Crichton wrote. "They" (meaning the Global Warming Industry) cannot even be trusted with the "real-world" data. It is just something to manipulate to confirm their models and simulations.

Even anomalous and physically suspect measured data passes through these alarmists without critical analysis. They have a vested interest in promoting a climate change panic. Their jobs depend on it.

One further note. The graphics in this post use only U.S. temperature data. The data from most of the rest of the planet is even more suspect and show greater global warming. Quality control cannot be confirmed in many of these nations. But more significant is the fact that many of the nations "producing data" showing an anthropogenic global warming effect will be the beneficiaries of significant economic gain if the United States is handcuffed by restrictions on greenhouse gas emissions.

Global warming's cause discovered - Visual Evidence

Anthony Watts created this graphic which shows the adjustments made to the U.S. temperature record between 1999 and 2008 by James Hansen's Goddard Institute of Space Studies. (Click the graphic to see it in it's entirety. The formatting does not cooperate with Blogger).

The philosophy at GISS appears to be: When the climate data does not cooperate, change it.

I can conceive of no reason to accept any information provided by the zealots at GISS at face value. The philosophy at Headless Blogger is: When in doubt, throw it out.

Global warming's cause discovered

On Monday you may have read about NASA's James Hansen declaring that October 2008 was the hottest October on record. The Climate Skeptic blog had this report.
For October, the GISS metric is showing the hottest October on record, nearly 0.8C hotter than it was 40 years ago in 1978. However, the satellites are showing no such thing, showing a much cooler October, and a far smaller warming trend over the last 40 years.

So which is right? Well, the situation is not helped by the fact that the GISS metric is run by James Hansen, considered by skeptics to be a leading alarmist, and the UAH is run by John Christy, considered by alarmists to be an arch-skeptic. The media generally uses the GISS data, so expect stories in the next day or so trumpeting "Hottest October Ever," which the Obama administration will wave around as justification for massive economic interventions. But by satellite it will only be the 10th or so hottest in the last 30, and probably cooler than most other readings this century.
That graphic at the top of the page shows the reason for the high GISS readings. A large area of northern Asia reported an average measured temperature for October that was 13.7 degrees Celsius warmer than normal.

Putting that into words that you and I can understand, a North America-sized area across Northern Asia was 25 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than normal for the month of October. I guess that would account for the new record high month. Twenty-five degrees warmer ... I'm surprised I didn't read about that in the news.

Eureka!

A blogger looking through NASA's dataset discovered an error. For the large area with the record high temperatures, September's temperatures were erroneously repeated for October. Again, putting it in terms that you and I can understand, NASA's vaunted Quality Assurance Program could not find this error, but some guy eating Pop Tarts in his pajamas at home did.

Even more amazing is that a huge brown 25 degree stain on the global temperature map was published by NASA without raising one single eyebrow within the buracracy.

From this it is easy to discern the cause of Global Warming. It is NASA's Dr. James Hansen fudging his data to achieve the results he needs to justify his abysmal climate model.

Aussie blogger Andrew Bolt may have put it best.

The Goddard Institute of Space Studies of warming extremist James Hansen has released its latest surface temperature data - and, oh my god, the recent cooling has suddenly ended.

Yes, it shows a huge upward spike for October - one of the biggest monthly anomalies ever recorded. And when you check closely, you will find that ... September was the hottest October ever recorded.

Corn prices now directly linked to oil prices

I caught this bit at a link from Instapundit.
Ethanol producers are jockeying for a seat on the increasingly crowded bailout bandwagon. Just last Friday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Ed Schafer addressed the plight of those poor, poor businessmen who got locked into the cost of corn this summer. Just like oil and natural gas, the current price is half of what it was at its peak.
I had not realized that corn prices had crashed since this Summer's peak. Here's my graphic overlay of corn and oil prices.

I have not asked the Wisconsin ethanol producers for their opinion, but to my eye, corn prices now (since December 2007) march in lockstep with crude oil prices (you may click any of the graphs for an enlarged view).

Stew on that one for a while ... OPEC now controls the price of your Frosted Flakes.

Contrary to this WFBL claim ...
ETHANOL helps ease gas prices.
With gas prices projected to be more than $4.00 per gallon this year, the use of ethanol-blended fuel usually lowers gas by 15 cents per gallon. It’s not a great savings, but every little bit helps with oil production controlled by OPEC and large oil companies making large profits

Ethanol does NOT ease gas prices, oil prices set ethanol and corn prices.

The fact is that corn prices are now arbitraged to oil prices. This is true solely because corn is used to produce ethanol. This was not the case just one year ago, but it is now. What has changed is that there is now excess ethanol production capacity in the U.S.

Because of this excess capacity, ethanol producers must compete for limited corn resources to produce their product. As oil prices rise, the price for corn will increase because these ethanol producers will bid corn prices up to chase the opportunity for increased profits.

This ain't just me speculating anymore. Here is your proof.

Weekly Light Crude Oil Prices, NYMEX

Weekly Corn Prices, CBOT

Weekly Oil versus Corn Prices

I think the next graph is particularly interesting. I pasted the commodity price of ethanol over the corn and crude oil graph. It shows that prior to October 2007, ethanol was selling at a premium to the cost of the raw material (corn) and energy (oil or natural gas) used in it's production.

This profit premium created an ethanol gold rush as everyone and his brother (So how's the ethanol business going Luther?) decided to build an ethanol plant. As a result, windfall profits are no longer available from ethanol production and many of these new distilleries are failing.

Weekly Oil versus Corn versus Ethanol Prices

Today's Question - When you fill your tank with that $2.50 gasoline, does it feel like you're stealing the shit?

I think I'll get me a really big SUV!

Updated 6/2/09 - The relationship still holds.

Correction: Corn cannot be too expensive for ethanol

Contrary to the research I posted in July, I have now determined that corn can never become too expensive to produce ethanol for profit. It will always be profitable if the Ag Department's ethanol pimps have any say in spreading our tax dollars around.
U.S. Agriculture Secretary Ed Schafer said the federal government is considering outlays of as much as $25 million to help ethanol plants, which have been hit by volatile commodity prices.

Gov. Palin takes on Global Warming

How to cool the planet.

1. Make sulfur dioxide
A million tons of sulfur dioxide would be needed to begin the cooling process. Luckily SO2, a byproduct of coal-burning power plants, is a common industrial chemical.

2. Inject it into the stratosphere
Load the sulfur dioxide into aircraft — converted 747s, military fighters, or even large balloons — and carry it up to the stratosphere. This will cost about $1 billion a year.

3. Wait for the chemical reaction
In a series of reactions, sulfur dioxide combines with other molecules in the atmosphere, ultimately forming sulfuric acid. This H2SO4 binds to water to form aerosol droplets that absorb and reflect back into space 1 to 3 percent of the sun’s rays. (The particles also contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer, but scientists are researching alternate chemicals.)

4. Let the planet cool
Results will be quick, especially over the Arctic.

Al Gore just talks, Sarah Palin makes things happen.
The August 7-8 eruption of Kasatochi volcano (Aleutian Islands) produced a very large stratospheric SO2 cloud - possibly the largest since the August 1991 eruption of Hudson (Chile). Preliminary SO2 mass calculations using Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) data suggest a total SO2 burden of ~1.5 Tg. This figure will be revised in the coming weeks but is more likely to go up than down. The SO2 cloud has drifted over a large area of North America and is now (August 14) reaching Europe.

Is there anything Sarah Palin cannot do?

EXCLUSIVE: Yost offered $20 million to not manage Brewers

While Headless Blogger cannot independently confirm this, a source close to a group of broadcasters, sportswriters and fans says that the group is preparing to present Ned Yost with an offer of $2 million annually for 10 years if he agrees to not manage the Milwaukee Brewers.

Headless Blogger has also learned that unlike the $20 million deal being offered by the Green Bay Packers to estranged quarterback Brett Favre, the Yost deal will encourage him to manage another MLB team. The deal provides incentives for Yost to manage other NL Central teams, with a premium of up to double the base deal if Yost manages the rival Chicago Cubs.

In response to an inquiry on the matter, Brewers radio voice Bob Uecker (not my anonymous source) said "I was at Miller Park today and had a nice visit with Ned Yost. We discussed a number of topics not related to baseball, including Ned's long-term relationship with the Brewers. I consider our conversation to be confidential and am going to be respectful of Neddy and keep the details private." (I repeat, Uke is not my source.)

Yost apparently didn't think much of the offer, as his agent told reporters that his client wished to remain with the Brewers.

"Right now he's interested in staying in the Brewers' dugout," his agent said.

It was later reported that Yost provided comments to ESPN with a text messsage.

"There isn't a perfect solution to this, but these fans are at least trying," Yost told ESPN's Ed Werder via text message on Thursday night. "We know what they want and where I stand. This solution, although awkward and unsettling for most, may be the best in the end.''

Brewers owner Mark Attanasio and GM Doug Melvin were not available for comment.

Elsewhere, despite a summer of no 90 degree temperatures in Milwaukee, meteorologists explained that this is another sign of manmade global warming.

Meteorologists at the weather service say several factors could be keeping the temperature down, but part of it may be the ground's fault. So much rain fell in June that the soil is saturated, the forecasters say. When the temperature hits the 80s, that moisture evaporates relatively quickly and keeps the air from heating more.

Also, thunderstorms developed several times last month and cooled the air when the temperature threatened to break out of the upper 80s.

The heavy rains and thunderstorms were previously blamed as attributable to global warming. Hence, global warming causes local cooling.

Seriously, that I could not make up. Everything after the "Elsewhere" is from our local online mainstream meda source.

Elsewhere, hat tip to Andy Borowitz for my inspiration.
